Supporting a Customer-Centric Brokerage
Based in Kansas City and serving customers for over 25 years, Greg Smith Enterprises (GS Enterprises) & Smith Transportation have built a reputation of excellence in the temperature-controlled freight space. Succeeding when timing is tight, stakes are high, and clean execution matters most.
Business Challenge: Modern Requirements Without Losing the Human Touch
In refrigerated freight, efficiency can’t come at the expense of service. When something goes wrong, delays escalate quickly if customers or drivers can’t reach a real person.
Panjada sees tension across the industry. “So many systems are promoted as, ‘we’re automating it… so we don’t need people,’” he says. “But then the actual user experience for the customer is horrible.”
At GS Enterprises, technological decisions are made with a different goal in mind: helping teams work more effectively without removing accountability or access.
“I don’t look at technology investment as a way to reduce overhead,” Panjada explains. “I look at it as a way to generate more revenue and provide a better customer experience because you’re able to do more with what you have.”
That philosophy matters most when freight is time-sensitive.
“With meat, fresh foods, produce, eggs, any of those industries where immediate attention is needed,” Panjada says. “You can’t wait two or three days.”
Those realities shaped a clear set of priorities:
- Support customers that require EDI.
- Reduce manual data entry and prevent avoidable errors.
- Improve speed and execution without disrupting service.
- Keep interactions personal, responsive, and human.
Investing in the Right Foundation
GS Enterprises took a measured approach to EDI adoption, investing when the timing and return on investment aligned with operational needs.
“We don’t want to lose our level of service,” Panjada says. “That’s something we take pride in. We’re very intentional about adapting to what our customers need.”
To meet customer requirements and reduce friction in daily operations, the team selected Kleinschmidt to support their EDI needs. The initial focus was on EDI load tenders (204s) and functional acknowledgments (997s), creating a consistent, trackable way to receive shipment details and confirm successful processing.
Their TMS provider, Systems Support Inc., referred Kleinschmidt to GS Enterprises. The solution fits GS Enterprises’ existing TMS workflows while supporting evolving requirements without forcing disruptive changes.
Across each decision, technology remains secondary to people and is adopted when it clearly supports how the business operates.
From his day-to-day role in the office, Panjada sees firsthand how technological decisions play out beyond the screen, particularly when automation falls short.
“We ran into a situation with another brokerage where our truck ended up sitting the entire weekend because their operation was overly dependent on automation. There was no accessible point of contact, no real person available to step in and resolve the issue, just a chatbot as part of an automated system. That lack of human accountability caused a serious problem for us,” he notes.
He sees that pattern repeated elsewhere. “A lot of investment in technology has gone toward reducing costs or increasing margins,” Panjada adds, “but sometimes that comes at the expense of the service experience. That’s where our edge is. Our customers value that higher level of service and those extra touchpoints.”
EDI provided a reliable foundation for structured data exchange, but it was never intended to replace judgment, communication, or accountability. That distinction shaped what came next.
Extending the Foundation with Document Conversion
EDI supports load tendering through EDI 204s, but not every tender arrives in a clean, system-ready format. In practice, shipment details still come through emails, PDFs, and other document-based formats that require fast, accurate handling.
Document conversion supports that same 204 workflow by transforming document-based tenders into usable EDI data. This reduces manual entry while keeping people involved when judgment or follow-up is required.
In refrigerated freight, load changes and confirmations often arrive under time pressure. Processing those documents efficiently, without pulling staff away from higher-value work, helps maintain responsiveness for both drivers and customers.
Panjada sees the impact clearly. “The data entry was definitely sped up,” he says. “It reduced errors. It reduced manual data entry.”
“There are always going to be cases where something may never be fully automated,” Panjada explains. “But you still need quick data entry and fewer errors.”
Looking Ahead
When reflecting on the future, Panjada emphasizes a steady, disciplined approach. He wants to continue to support existing customers, remain prepared as the freight market recovers, and invest in technology where it strengthens execution without changing how the business operates.
As GS Enterprises grows, the team is focused on scaling in a way that protects what customers value most: consistency, responsiveness, and a smooth service experience—without unnecessary disruption.
“We’re focused on doing the right things well and continuing to build around the kind of service our customers expect,” Panjada says.
